HAPPY NEW YEAR 2006

Posted on 07:41 by ricky pointing
After the Times Square Ball drops and the new year really begins, what will the next 365 days have in store for you? We are interested in your resolutions, goals and thoughts about what you hope to achieve.

The crystal ball is six feet wide and made by the Waterford crystal company. It weighs over a ton and is lit from within by Philips halogen bulbs.

Toon Characters Speak Out

Posted on 17:28 by ricky pointing
Daffy Duck was always in the shadow of Bugs Bunny. Bugs was unfairly favored at the studio. Their images were twisted to favor Bugs. While ducks are really cool (they can fly and swim), rabbits are goofy (they dart about and drop quantities of little round turds). Okay, Bugs is the white guy and Daffy is the black guy. And Daffy never got a break. He was left to always be the whiny victim. Bugs got all the cool lines and demeanor.

UPDATE (2007): AAEA-Hollywood has discovered that Bugs Bunny was originally Black. Quite a conundrum. A cruel twist.

Marvin the Martian is a black Martian obsessed with getting the Earth out of the way of his view of Venus. His weapon of choice is the Illudium Q-36 explosive space modulator. Interestingly, a black, even on Mars, is associated with a gun and portrayed as posing a threat to the Earth. Viva la Daffy. Viva la Marvin. We demand equal treatment with Bugs.

Unfortunately, black-on-black violence is being exhibited by Daffy and Marvin even on Mars. Daffy constantly tries to steal the crystal that powers Marvin's ray gun and Marvin shoots Daffy with the atomizer, decomposing him in the process. Bugs usually intervenes to assist with Daffy's reatomization. The Mars Chapter of the NAACP is ignoring the issue.

Santa Claus: Environmental Impact Statement

Posted on 07:18 by ricky pointing
PETA has trouble with the fur coat. The red and white paint on the fur contain toxins. The reindeer are captive in cages in freezing temperatures and allowed out one time each year to work long hours. Santa is grossly overweight and is susceptible to a stroke or heart attack. Santa is promoting sprawl by living at the North Pole and his manufacturing facility is polluting the land, water and air. And what about black Santa?

Santa supports drilling in ANWR because his delivery service needs the extra oil (he doesn’t really deliver presents worldwide all by himself). Santa uses nonunion, Chinese labor and undercuts other smaller stores by giving away his product. We can’t tell whether Santa is a Republican or Democrat. It is rumored that Santa is being subsidized by the U.S. government and is receiving special air clearances by the Defense Department. Congress is calling for an investigation. Clearly, the Record of Decision should reflect that Santa is a significant polluting entity.

Big Black Goes Ape For Blond

Posted on 16:12 by ricky pointing
King Kong is a great 3-hour epic love story between the beauty and the beast. I can see how the big fella fell for Naomi Watts. She is fine. But I do not see how she fell for Adrien Brody. King Kong looks better. When the blond first meets Kong, she screams when she sees how big he is. When Kong runs off with the blond, a bunch of white men armed with automatic weapons pursues them through the jungle to save her. Interestingly, the search party is led by a Black man.

Skull Island is some type of environmental aberration with dinosaurs and amazingly nasty bugs of all types. The natives are zombies right out of 28 Days Later and Dawn of the Dead. They seem to be on some pretty powerful psychotropic drugs too. Kong fights and kills 3 T-Rexes and giant bats. Kong is captured when a bottle of chloroform* is broken on his face and he inhales the fumes.

After being exploited on Broadway, he escapes and does a number on Times Square. He wants to find Naomi Watts and any old blond will not do. He dispatches with blonds faster than a cheap New York pimp until Watts finally shows up. Watts was so distraught at the loss of her love at the top of the Empire State Building that I thought she was going to jump too. Of course, the other beast shows up to save her.

*Chloroform (also known as trichloromethane and methyl trichloride) is a member of environmental pollutants known as trihalomethanes a by-product of chlorination of drinking water and a long-standing health concern. In the past, chloroform was used as an inhaled anesthetic during surgery, but it isn't used that way today. Breathing chloroform can cause dizziness, fatigue, and headaches. Acting White

Posted on 10:10 by ricky pointing
The irony of this behavioral phenomenon is that it is an environmental issue in Hollywood, in the classroom, and in the black community. It isn't real but it is a distraction to the easily bamboozled. The dynamic LaShaun Barber (pictured above) gives a great description of this paradoxical trap at her CORNER. Which actors 'act white?' Which ones 'act black?' What is 'acting white' and 'acting black?'

Positive Hip Hop Environment

Posted on 07:28 by ricky pointing
Hip Hop successfully penetrated Hollywood like rock & roll and rhythme & blues never did. Hip Hop opened the Hollywood doors to an unprecedented number of blacks. Of course, maybe Motown stars such as Diana Ross pointed the way. But the Temptations, 4 Tops, James Brown, Sly Stone and Jimi Hendrix, although some of the best ever, never penetrated Hollywood like Will Smith, Queen Latifah, Ice Cube, Ice-T, LL Cool J, Outkast (Andre Benjamin) Eve, and others. Maybe the times also had much to do with it. Although the 60's stars had the talent, they probably just did not have the opportunities. Anyway, it is good to have something good to say about Hip Hop, because much of the news this CNN for the Hood broadcasts is quite negative.

It's A Wonderful Life

Posted on 17:21 by ricky pointing
I just watched my favorite movie (excluding The Matrix Trilogy) again and it was as good as ever. Frank Capra also cast many blacks in this 1946 film, including Annie as Bailey's maid (those were the only roles blacks could get back then). Mr. Gower would have been arrested for child abuse today for injuring George's ear. Harry Bailey would have been charged with sexual harassment for slapping Annie on her behind. Donna Reed shouting upstairs to her mother, "he is making passionate love to me.." was pretty racy for that time. But let's get to the real question:

Can anyone out there tell us the plant Zuzu's petals came from? And Googling it will take some real research. A big prize for the first right answer.
"They're not there either...Zuzu's petals."

1) This blog, the AAEA Hollywood Blog and AAEA's experiences with constituents on these blogs.

2) Will podcasting take off or do most people prefer their talk on the radio and music on their iPods?

3) Nuclear power. The AAEA supports it as the solution to air pollution and global climate change problems.

DiCaprio Green Documentary Fiction?

Posted on 07:54 by ricky pointing
If Leonardo DiCaprio does not endorse nuclear power as the front-line technology fix for global warming in his planned documentary, he is producing fiction. The film, 11th Hour, a feature-length film that explores global warming and offers solutions for restoring the planet's ecosystems, is scheduled to be released in fall 2006. He will collaborate on 11th Hour with Tree Media Group founders Lelia Conners Petersen and Nadia Conners to produce, co-write and narrate the film.

AEon Flux & Black Monkey Woman

Posted on 22:10 by ricky pointing
Although the movie is visually stunning, intelligent and has okay action, the image of one black character, Sithandra, was interesting - - her feet were surgically replaced with hands. She proceeded to swing from tree limbs. Maybe it wasn't intended, but this modification essentially turned her into a monkey. Or maybe racism was intended. What do you think?

The setting for the movie takes place 400 years in the future, after a virus decimated 99% of the earth’s population. What is left of mankind, now reduced to only 5 million souls, resides within a walled city-Utopia called Bregna. Doesn't it seem that in Hollywood the Earth is often decimated by a virus in the future?

Æon is a citizen of the anarchist country of Monica and is a tall, sexy, scantily-clad secret agent . Æon is sent on a mission to assassinate Trevor Goodchild, biology expert and ruler of Bregna, as well as a direct descendent of the scientist who had saved humanity from oblivion by devising a cure for the virus. Things don’t go exactly as planned. They never do in these movies do they?

Robert Redford's Sundance Institute has announced the 64 films that will play at the Park City, Utah, Sundance Festival that runs Jan. 19-29, 2006. The festival is the nation's top showcase for independent film.

Among 16 films contending for the top U.S. documentary prize will be "American Blackout," director Ian Inaba's examination of voting troubles for blacks in Florida and Ohio in recent presidential elections. Aren't there any right-wing filmmakers out there who could produce a film showing how the Democratic Party is incapable of protecting black voters at the polls?

Laurie's Global Warming Show

Posted on 07:28 by ricky pointing
Taped in Las Vegas, the two hour TBS broadcast of Earth to America featured some of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Tom Hanks playing acoustic guitar was particularly interesting. Laurie David is quite active in publicizing the problem of global warming. Unfortunately, she is promoting Hollywood solutions to the problem. She and Leonardo DiCaprio always highlight their Prius ownership and promote personal efficiency retrofits, when we all know that they have multiple homes and cars. Thus, such frugality recommendations ring hollow to us. They should show us their other cars and homes. Larry David is delightfully irreverent in this regard.

This is America and everyone wants big houses, multiple cars, every electronic device we can stuff in our homes, plus BIG boats and large properties. The real solution is to provide the American way of life through appropriate technology. They do have half of the equation right though in promoting hybrid vehicles. We must aggressively push NUCLEAR POWER combined with plug-in fuel cell powered hybrid vehicles to solve our global climate change problems. Cedric the Entertainer and Wanda Sykes participated in the show.

Rev Al Sharpton's New TV Show

Posted on 06:25 by ricky pointing
TVOne features one of our favorite people in a new show called Sharp Talk With Al Sharpton. The set is a barbershop and captures the flavor of a local hair cutery. It seems strange seeing white people in a black barbershop though. It is probably because you never see whites in a black barbershop. Maybe Rev will start a new trend here and whites will start getting their hair cut in black barbershops.

The subject matter is topical and covers the spectrum of issues of importance in America today. Reverend Sharpton is one of the smartest men out there and his examinations should be informative.

She's a pretty good shot too. Two thumps up.

Dawn of the Dead: Environmentalists?

Posted on 17:39 by ricky pointing
If you like a good dead flik, you will love this one. No matter what environmental catastrophe caused the dead to rise again, these dead in the 2004 version can RUN. Just like the rage zombies in 28 Days Later, these undead can really get up. Nicole, evidently an extreme animal lover, risks her life to save her dog from the undead. Then the rest of the cast risks their lives to save her. The fun part about these movies is to see who will make it.

This movie could represent the current state of the environmental movement in the 21st Century as described by the Reapers in The Death of Environmentalism. The undead, like many extremist environmentalists, are running to infect others to make them undead. There were interracial couples in both films. (View Trailer)

Hollywood Digital Ecology

Posted on 14:09 by ricky pointing
Hollywood can and will save energy and money one day by providing movies to theaters via filmless digital cameras and digital projection in theaters. Currently, movies are made on 35-millimeter celluloid negatives from which reels of film are printed, sent to film exchanges, trucked to theaters, and projected on the screen with the aid of a powerful lamp. These 35-millimeter prints are expensive to make and cumbersome to distribute. In 2003 the average cost to make prints for distribution of a studio film in America was $4.2 million. The six major studios had a print bill of more than $1 billion in 2003.

Digital delivery from studio to theater via satellite or cable eliminates physical truck delivery, which will save money and energy. One of the current hold ups is who will pay for and control the $80,000 digital cameras? In 2004 there were 36,012 movie screens in the U.S. (Source: Edward Jay Epstein, The NEW LOGIC of MONEY and POWER in HOLLYWOOD)

Boston Legal: Global Warming

Posted on 19:49 by ricky pointing
Tonight's episode found James Spader defending a television children's show against a clown wanting to talk about global warming on the show. Spader gave a passionate defense of the seriousness of global warming and that it did not need to be represented by a clown on a children's show. He unfortunately insulted President Bush on the issue (most of Washington's politicians have avoided the issue--more so than Bush). Spader won the case.

The great attraction of this show is that we get that intergalactic planetary savior William Shatner playing the nutty Denny Crane on the show. Who else has flown whales from the past around the sun and into the future to save the Earth from a menacing alien whale spaceship.

The West Wing Presidential Debate

Posted on 11:32 by ricky pointing
If you saw it, who do you think won? Fictional presidential candidates Matt Santos (Jimmy Smits) and Arnold Vinick (Alan Alda) debated on Sunday. Energy & environmental issues were part of the debate: Democratic congressman Santos believes in using alternatives, such as solar and wind to fight global warming. Santos is anti ANWR oil drilling, anti-nuclear and demanded that his opponent take and oath to, "Never go to war for oil" (Vinick refused). In a soliloquy about liberal Republicans Santos complimented republicans for passing the Clean Water Act. Republican senator Vinick does not believe in global warming, is pro drilling in ANWR, promoted the Prius hybrid car, believes in free markets and doesn't trust the government to solve energy problems.

TV President Prevents Oil Spill

Posted on 19:12 by ricky pointing
The Nov 1, 2005 episode of Commander-in-Chief starring Gina Davis had her saving the Gulf, Florida and the East Coast from a massive oil spill from a damaged oil tanker. The fictional governor of Florida and the power-hungry Speaker of the House (Donald Sutherland) wanted the president to sink the tanker instead of risking it breaking up while trying to dock at a port in Florida. The environmental group in the episode supported the speaker and the governor (partisan politics--the president is an independent and the speaker is a Democrat). Interestingly, during negotiations, Gina as president, opposed a permanent ban on drilling in the Outer Continental Shelf citing the country's need for oil as her rationale.

In Hollywood the White House Chief of Staff is black. In Bush's Washington the Secretary of State is black. Advantage Bush.

Spike Lee's Environmentalism: Science Fiction

Posted on 10:20 by ricky pointing
AAEA President Norris McDonald met Spike Lee in Washington, DC where he was signing his new biography by Kaleem Aftab, That's My Story and I'm Sticking To It. Spike is planning a documentary on Hurricane Katrina's impact on New Orleans. McDonald suggested that he consider including climate change in the documentary.

AAEA-Hollywood noticed that Spike has not made movies with environmental or science fiction themes. His biography states that he did produce a 16mm science fiction film when he was in college called She Wore Black Shoes, which, "featured a woman with nice legs who wore black stockings and carried slime in here purse. Anybody who got touched by the slime would die instantly." We think it would be great if Spike made a science fiction movie with an environmental theme.

Bruce Willis - Apocalyptic Environmentalist?

Posted on 14:55 by ricky pointing
AAEA President Norris McDonald recently met Bruce Willis at an event honoring him for his commitment to the environment -- notwithstanding EPA hassling him in Idaho. The event on Randall's Island, in the shadow of Manhattan, made McDonald consider the constrast between the environmentalist Bruce Willis and the apocalyptic environmentalist he portrayed (James Cole) in the movie, '12 Monkeys.' The film begins in our future in the year 2035, and presupposes that the surface of the earth has become uninhabitable by humans due to a viral plague that wiped out 5 billion people beginning in 1996, leaving less than 1% of the world's population to survive in a harsh life underground. The post-apocalyptic scenes of the underground society were shot in an abandoned power plant.

In the year 2035, a team of underworld scientists "volunteer" prison inmate James Cole (played by Bruce Willis) for a special mission: to return in time and find the source of the pure virus, so that a cure might be found that would return humankind to the surface of the earth. The abuses in the minds of lunatic environmental activists are rampant consumerism, animal exploitation and environmental devastation. These abuses are brought to light mainly through the character of Jeffrey Goines (played by Brad Pitt), the mentally ill son of a famous virologist, animal activist and the organizer of "The Army of the Twelve Monkeys."

While detained in a mental asylum with Coles, Goines points to a television and explains the sin of consumerism. As the manic mental patient, Mr. Pitt created a vivid character full of tics and tirades. It is Goines' colleague, the assistant of Goines' virologist father, who steals and purposefully releases the virus that kills 5 billion people. Cole is a messiah figure who ultimately suffers mental derangement by trying to bridge two worlds and ultimately fails to avert the plague of 1996, and in the end cannot even save himself. At the last moment he puts together the actual cause of the disease, reports it, and gets himself killed in an attempt to stop a man from carrying samples of the original virus onto an airplane. The story is brought to a full circle as the young Cole sees his future self shot dead at an airport. In a final scene one of the scientists is shown taking a seat on an airplane next to the man in posession of the original virus, and introducing herself as "in insurance". We are left to conclude that Cole's mission was a success, and provided some hope of salvation for the humanity of his era.

Although some of Bruce's other films, such as 'The Fifth Element' and 'Armageddon,' also have environmental themes and subtexts, '12 Monkeys' is the deepest. And it doesn't hurt that Bruce is one of the coolest actors in Hollywood. He is also not above 'sending up' self righteous, elitist environmentalists in roles: In the opening of 'Armageddon,' Bruce Willis is atop an offshore oil rig amusing himself by driving golf balls at environmental protesters buzzing around below in their zodiac boats.

It is being reported that Halle Berry and Bruce Willis will film a thriller in 2006.

A CIVIL ACTION: A Quintessential Environmental Litigation Film

Posted on 16:33 by ricky pointing
Jan Schlittman (John Travolta) is a humble, cynical, successful, bachelor lawyer with a nice car, a nice house, and a career that has amassed huge rewards. He agrees to represent eight families whose children died from leukemia after two large corporations leaked toxic chemicals into the water supply of Woburn, Massachusetts, even though the case could mean financial, and career suicide for him.

Jan thinks it is one more case he can easily knock out of the park and make a fortune, as well as a name for himself and his firm. With a class action lawsuit to file, Jan willingly puts himself and his firm as representatives of those families. However, it's one case that could ruin Jan: his pride, his ambition, and ultimately, his career.

James Gandolfini portrays a victim in this film -- it was 1998 before his Soprano's fame. Robert Duval plays an evil defense lawyer (what else is new). John Lithgow is the judge. We hate litigation at AAEA. Interesting too that the name of the company, Beatrice, was the name of one of the largest black-owned firms in history (Owner: Reginald Lewis).

Michael Jackson, Katrina & Oil

Posted on 09:52 by ricky pointing
After the trial, Michael Jackson took his two sons and daughter to Bahrain, an island off the coast of Saudi Arabia. It is an oil-rich country about 3 times the size of Washington, DC. The heir to the Bahrain kingdom is generously hosting Jackson and evidently helping to finance his comeback. Michael Jackson is evidently using this oil money to produce a song, From The Bottom Of My Heart, to benefit victims of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Published reports say that Sheik Abdulla bin Hamad Al Khalifa, son of the king of Bahrain, owns the label (2 Seas Records) where the song will be recorded. It is also being reported that he has bought a house on 14 acres in Bahrain.

Although the name appears all kinds of ways, according to the CIA The World Fact Book, here is the hierarchy: chief of state: King HAMAD bin Isa Al Khalifa (since 6 March 1999); Heir Apparent Crown Prince SALMAN bin Hamad (son of the monarch, born 21 October 1969)
head of government: Prime Minister KHALIFA bin Salman Al Khalifa (since 1971)

Performers rumored to be participating on the song include: James Brown, Jaz-Z, Mary J. Blige, Missy Elliott, Lenny Kravitz, R. Kelly, Snoop Dogg, Ciara, Mariah Carey, Wyclef Jean, Lauren Hill, Yolanda Adams, Babyface, and the O'Jays.

Desperate Housewives Mirror U.S. Energy Dysfunction

Posted on 09:19 by ricky pointing
Just as the wacky inhabits of Wisteria Lane on the hit TV show Desperate Housewives want happiness, they seem to do everything in their power to prevent being happy. Notwithstanding the stereotypical slutty latina with a criminal husband and the young black male carrying a gun to feed a mysterious missing father figure hidden in the basement, the pristine suburbs are straight Americana. The whites on the show are pretty dysfunctional too, with murderers, slutty SWF, nutty kids and fornicators everywhere. A typical manicured, SUV-in-the-driveway suburb?

Well isn't this like our energy situation in America. We want energy conservation and freedom from being addicted to foreign oil, yet we salivate for huge homes and SUVs. We don't want a gas pipeline, powerplant or factory near us, but we want 6 televisions, 3 cars, 3 computers, cell phone chargers, printers and every other gadget we can think of in our homes. We say we want solar and wind power when we know it will not work to provide enough electricity. We fear nuclear power when it emits no polluting gases. Nobody wants a coal fired electric power plant in their neighborhood but coal provides 50 % of the nation's electricity. Our energy behavior is right out of Wisteria Lane.

J. Lo's Fur Is Okay

Posted on 07:28 by ricky pointing

Heather Mills McCartney, wife of Paul McCartney has decided to target her anti fur campaign on Latino and African American performers. Her prime targets are Jennifer Lopez and Diddy (Sean Combs). She singled out these two celebrities during Fashion Week in Bryant Park in New York City at a press conference with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA).

Although Ms. Mills-McCartney is right to work for the ethical treatment of animals, she is wrong to make these two minority celebrities the poster children for mistreatment of animals. Ms. Mills-McCartney did not produce any evidence to prove that the animals used to produce Ms. Lopez-Anthony’s fur wear were mistreated. Furthermore, it is an elitist attitude to tell minorities that they cannot participate in the purchase of products or participate in other high-end activities because of esoteric animal rights concerns.

Whites have worn fur for hundreds of years and could afford the expensive furs, while minorities have only recently had the luxury of affording such purchases. The same principle applies for waterfront properties. Right at the point when blacks and other minorities can afford to purchase a beach house, if the gated area is not red lining blacks out of such purchases, environmentalists are working to put such new beach front residential developments off limits. This while many white celebrities work for protection of the outback, they also own homes in the wilderness areas. They like to lock the gate behind them.

So Ms. Mills-McCarthy does a disservice to blacks and other minorities when she says they should not purchase fur products. Next she will be saying they can’t buy chicken.

Hollywood & Hurricane Katrina

Posted on 17:36 by ricky pointing

Left coast celebrities are trekking to New Orleans and the Gulf Coast in droves. They are appearing on numerous television shows and rock star/rap musicians are organizing and performing in relief concerts. We have 5 recommendations for any Hollywood celebrity and rich musician visiting the crisis area and appearing on television:

  1. If you have more than one house, donate a house to a victimized family.
  2. Donate $200,000 to a victimized family.
  3. If you have more than two cars, donate a car to a victimized family.
  4. If you do not have kids and want to adopt a kid, adopt a victimized child.
  5. If you can afford it, buy a low-income victim of the hurricane a home in New Orleans.

If you have more suggestions, let us know. Comment.

Bill 'I am my own God and Yours Too' Maher has a blog site with an openly racist environmentalist ranting about "Protecting the White Environment." Most racist environmentalists usually hide their overt racism, although the vast majority of mainstream environmental groups openly practice discrimination in hiring and retaining blacks (There are about 4 notable exceptions, however). You wanna hear it uncut? Check this green-hooded tree hugger out.
To be fair to Maher, the site did ban the person posting the racist comments. Maher is adamant about free speech though so they left the post up. This is also explained by one of Maher's people (I assume) in comments.

The China Syndrome II: Climate Change

Posted on 16:08 by ricky pointing
It is The Day After Tomorrow scenario: super hurricanes, killer tornadoes, melting ice caps, coastal flooding, droughts, wildfires and killer smog. Global warming and climate change have convinced Jane Fonda and Michael Douglas that nuclear power is the way to go because it is emission free and does not contribute greenhouse gases or smog forming gases to the atmosphere. Jack Lemmon does not have to be convinced. He was the pro-nuke corporate guy in the first film in 1979. Lemmon leads the charge as the advocate for using nukes to save Earth's atmosphere in this film.

Fonda, Douglas and Lemmon commandeer the controls of a national television network and demand that more nuclear plants and electric vehicles should be used worldwide. After they post bail, they testify before Congress and the Nuclear Regulatory Commission demanding the same. The film is a worldwide phenomenon and convinces the public that nuclear power and electric vehicles are the solutions for global climate change. Okay. We're dreaming. But we can hope.

Terminator 3: Fuel Cells

Posted on 12:01 by ricky pointing
It is revealed that the Terminator runs on a fuel cell. Talk about 'takes a licking and keeps on kicking.' Arnold states that, "When ruptured, the fuel cell becomes unstable." His chest mounted fuel cell (looks like a printer cartridge) blew up after he tossed it.

The Governator is working on a Hummer powered by a fuel cell. Reality mimics fantasy. And just as the cybernetic organism Arnold played in the movies had to repair himself, Arnold also had a major heart operation to correct a congenital condition. Hang in there governor. We're with you.

Hustle & Flow: High Tide

Posted on 17:02 by ricky pointing

In the two scenes where Terrance 'DJay' Howard is by the Mississippi River, the tide is going out. Nice imagery for the struggle of the characters to get out of their hopeless circumstances. This movie has the biggest heart of the summer. It will break your heart, make you cry and lift you up. You wouldn't think so because it is a movie about a pimp and his prostitutes.

The tag line for the movie, "Everybody Has A Dream," is the heart of the movie. It is the pursuit of the dream that makes this movie's heart beat and makes you love the characters. The other hook in the movie will stay with you: "It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp..."
