Radio One founder Cathy L. Hughes, left, and her son, Alfred C. Liggins III, right, celebrated moving from a small daytme AM radio in a trailer in Washington, DC in 1979 to owning 71 stations around the country today with 15 million listeners. Radio One is the only publicly traded company headed by an African American woman. Liggins graduated from the Wharton Business School and took over as Radio One CEO in 1989. Huges remains as Chairwoman. They also own and operate the TV One Cable Channel.The event was held at the J.W. Marriott Hotel in downtown Washington, DC. It was attended by numerous celebrities: AAEA founding board member Dick Gregory, Time Warner CEO Richard Parsons, Sean 'P.Diddy' Combs, Jay-Z, Russell Simmons, Ruben Studdard, Danny Glover, Chuck Brown, James Ingram, Tom Joyner, Michael Eric Dyson and Maryland Lt. Governor and Senate candidate Michael Steele, among others. Entertainment was provided by Natalie Cole, Aretha Franklin and Beyonce Knowles.
